Jews Against the Occupation A Jewish Voice of Opposition to the War on Palestinians
NY Jews link Chanukah Celebration with Opposition to Israeli Occupation
November 29, 2002
Press Release Members of Jews Against the Occupation and community members working for human rights and democracy in Israel/Palestine will parade up Fifth Avenue dressed as human menorahs, each carrying a sign relating the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem to Hanukah’s central theme of freedom from oppression. They will hand out literature and free Dreidels. The literature, as well as the signs held by members of the parade, will remind holiday shoppers of the condition of economic destitution and the profound violations of human rights that are currently enforced by the Israel Army in Palestine. Hanukah commemorates a historical moment when Jews successfully battled oppression to win self-determination. In the spirit of Hanukah and its message, New York City Jews will stand together against the numerous forms of oppression currently experienced by Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. Friday, November 29th is the first night of Hanukah, the UN day of solidarity with Palestine, the anniversary of the unimplemented UN Partition Plan, and the biggest shopping day of the year. Jews Against The Occupation is a New York City based group of Jewish community leaders, and part of a growing movement of worldwide Jewish dissent against the illegal, violent actions of the Israeli government and the occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.
